Nonna’s “S” Cookies Directions: • Preheat the oven to 400F degrees. • In a stand mixer, fitted with a paddle attachment on medium speed, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. • Scrape down the sides of the bowl and with the mixer on low speed and add beaten eggs, vanilla, and anise. • Sift the flour and baking powder together and slowly add to the mixer. Scrape down the sides of the bowl and roll out onto a well floured surface. The dough will be quite sticky. • Coat well with flour and wrap in plastic wrap. Chill in the refrigerator for 1 - 1 ½ hours. • Place on to a well floured surface and divide into 4 equal parts. Roll each part into a log shape no thicker than a ½”. Cut each log into 3” sections and form dough into an “S” shape. • Place each cookie on a lightly greased baking sheet spaced 2” apart. They will spread while baking. • Brush each cookie with the remaining egg yolk mixed with a tablespoon of water, for a glazed finish. • Bake for 15 – 20 minutes or until lightly golden brown and let cool. Big Red Kitchen Yields 36 – 46 cookies. Ingredients: • 5 eggs (4 eggs for dough, 1 egg yolk for glazing) • 2 1/2 sticks of unsalted butter, softened • 1 1/4 pounds all purpose flour • 1 1/4 cup sugar • 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Events Department Family Fun Tip!
