New York City after the American Revolution was awash in conflicting ideas and spiritualities, money to be won and lost, and a sudden new disease, yellow fever, to be feared and combated.  In that setting, Elizabeth Bayley Seton grew to adulthood and became a respectable society matron -- before being tragically widowed and shocking her friends and family by converting to a mistrusted faith.  This talk explores the surprising life of Elizabeth Seton, who two hundred years after her death was canonized as the first Roman Catholic saint of American birth.

Catherine O'Donnell is Professor of History at Arizona State University, where she also serves as history faculty head.  Educated at Amherst College and the University of Michigan, she writes on culture, politics, and religion in the Atlantic World and early American republic, and is the author most recently of Elizabeth Seton: American Saint (Cornell UP, 2018).
