The College Olympics: How to Choose the Right College and How to Get the Right College Choose You

Derived from Professor Daniel Schwarz's book How to Succeed in College and Beyond: The Art of Learning (Wiley; also published in China by Remnin University Press in a Mandarin edition) and his fifty one years teaching at Cornell University, as well as input from students, faculty and administrators, his talk will address how to successfully apply to college, how to succeed when you get to college, and how to use your college years to prepare for the future. He will discuss how the admissions environment may evolve in light of the recent admissions scandal & the Harvard law suit.

Daniel R. Schwarz is Frederic J. Whiton Professor of English Literature and Stephen H. Weiss Presidential Fellow at Cornell University, where he has taught since 1968. He is a renowned teacher, scholar, and public intellectual. In 1998 he received Cornell University's College of Arts and Sciences Russell Award for distinguished teaching, and the Weiss title also speaks to his teaching prowess.

In March 2018 he was honored with a two day conference entitled  "Celebrating Dan Schwarz: Fifty Years of Transformative Teaching," attended by hundreds of his former students; his talk on transformative teaching was a highlight of that occasion.

Schwarz is the author of the well-received Crises and Turmoil at the New York Times, 1999-2009. In recent years, he has been blogging on the media and higher education for the Huffington Post.   He is considered one of the world's leading authorities on James Joyce, Joseph Conrad, and Twentieth Century Modernism.

6:00pm reception; 6:30pm lecture, gratis. Members and one guest per member are invited to dine at The Club with Professor Schwarz following the lecture. The cost is $45 per person, inclusive of tax, service charge, and one glass of wine with dinner. Dinner reservations are required 48 hours prior to the program.
