Edwardian Mansions of Riverside Drive Tour
In 1873, Central Park creator Frederick Law Olmsted proposed an ambitious plan to transform the scenic countryside along the Hudson River into a park and drive. Developers saw the drive with its breathtaking views as a rival to Fifth Avenue, and soon started hiring the city's most esteemed architects to design mansions targeted to the ultra-wealthy. This outdoor tour delves into some of those West Side stories of Riverside Drive. We will stroll and view the exteriors of the mansions of William Randolph Hearst, Robert Davis, Duke Ellington, and actress Julia Marlowe; as well as an important artifact from the bombing of Hiroshima, the home of Humphrey Bogart, and one of New York's least known "secret" museums.
