Join us on a walk across the "Great Bridge" -- once the longest suspension in the world -- as we learn its creation and early history. We'll discuss the work of the Roebling family , the designers of the bridge, and the sacrifice and the dramatic stories of the immigrant workers who built it. Then we will walk through New York's first suburb, and address the transition of the Heights from wealthy Victorian suburb to literary haven. Stops include where Lincoln and Walt Whitman worshipped; a stop on the Underground Railroad; the house where Truman Capote wrote Breakfast at Tiffany's; where George Washington's quick action saved the Continental Army; and the Promenade, with its magnificent view of Manhattan island at twilight!
Meets at the statue of Ben Franklin at the corner of Spruce Street and Park Row. The statue is in front of Pace University and to the right of the entrance to the Brooklyn Bridge. Subway: 4,5,6 to Brooklyn Bridge/City Hall.
