Cornell at the Theater - Romeo & Bernadette: A Musical Tale of Verona & Brooklyn, and Post Show Q&A with Member Mark Saltzman '73 (Book and Lyrics)

Romeo and Bernadette: A Musical Tale of Verona and Brooklyn" opened in early 2020, and on the strength of award honors, rave reviews and ticket demand, packed up to move over to a larger theater. A certain virus had other ideas. Now re-awakening, in much the way Romeo does in this musical, the show begins previews at Theater 555 on May 3rd for a limited run with eyes on a move to Broadway.

In this wild spoof of Shakespeare's timeless tale, Romeo yes, THAT Romeo - awakens and finds himself in 1960 Brooklyn, chasing a girl he believes is his beloved Juliet. But no, it's Bernadette, the beautiful, foul-mouthed daughter of a crime family.

Mark Saltzman '73 won seven Emmy Awards for his work on "Sesame Street" and went on to be a Hollywood screenwriter and playwright (Mark-Saltzman.com).  He studied at Cornell, where playwriting professor Bert States encouraged him to cut the Samuel Beckett affectation and write in his natural comedic voice. Mark has Cornell and Professor States to thank and would like to believe he does just that with "Romeo and Bernadette."
