Virtual Tasting - Shafer Vineyards Wine Tasting
Shafer Vineyards, founded by John Shafer '48, is a family-owned Napa Valley winery, and is named "one of the world's greatest wineries" by Robert M. Parker, Jr., in The Wine Advocate. The Shafer family's estate vineyards are located in Stags Leap District, one of the most highly-regarded winegrowing regions within Napa Valley, where they have produced wine for more than 40 years. Shafer wines, including its signature Cabernet Sauvignon, Hillside Select, are found in collectors' cellars and on wine lists in top hotels and restaurants throughout the world.
The Shafer family owns and cultivates more than 200 acres of vineyards, sources for their Red Shoulder Ranch Chardonnay, TD-9 proprietary red blend, One Point Five Cabernet Sauvignon, Relentless Syrah, and Hillside Select. Doug Shafer is winery president and Elias Fernandez is winemaker.
John Gretz, Director of Wine Education at Shafer Vineyards, will guide you through tasting two Shafer Vineyard wines, offer some background on the vintages, chat about what's happening at the winery, and answer any questions. Attendees will taste 2018 Red Shoulder Ranch Chardonnay and 2017 One Point Five Cabernet Sauvignon, and are welcome to purchase one or both. Please note members must source the wines themselves and The Club cannot order the wines for you.
John Gretz is the Director of Wine Education at Shafer Vineyards and is a certified sommelier. He's lived in the Napa Valley for 24 years, with close to 15 of them at Shafer Vineyards. His younger brother Bruce is a 1985 Cornell Alumni.
