Professor Barry Strauss will discuss his bestselling new book Ten Caesars: Roman Emperors from Augustus to Constantine. Strauss tells the story of three and a half centuries of the Roman Empire through the lives of ten of the most important emperors, from Augustus to Constantine. They made the Roman Empire the ruthless, violent, yet surprisingly open society that continues to fascinate us today.

BARRY STRAUSS, Bryce & Edith M. Bowmar Professor in Humanistic Studies at Cornell University, is a military historian with a focus on ancient Greece and Rome.  

In 2019-20 he is Distinguished Visiting Professor at the Naval Postgraduate School. He holds the Clark Award for Distinguished Teaching from Cornell University.

His books have been translated into sixteen languages. His latest book, Ten Caesars: Roman Emperors from Augustus to Constantine (Simon & Schuster, 2019) has been hailed as "superb summation of four centuries of Roman history, a masterpiece of compression," (The Wall Street Journal). It was named to several best books of the year lists, including by amazon.com. 

His Battle of Salamis: The Naval Encounter That Saved Greece—and Western Civilization was named one of the best books of 2004 by the Washington Post. His Masters of Command: Alexander, Hannibal, Caesar and the Genius of Leadership, was named one of the best books of 2012 by Bloomberg. 

He has been awarded fellowships and residencies from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Hoover Institution, the American Academy in Rome, and the American School of Classical Studies, among others. In recognition of his scholarship, he was named an Honorary Citizen of Salamis, Greece.
