About our Speakers
Lee Humphreys '99, Associate Professor of Communications, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences
Dr. Lee Humphreys studies the social uses and perceived effects of communication technology. Her research has explored mobile phone use in public spaces, emerging norms on mobile social networks, and the privacy and surveillance implications of location-based services. She focuses on how people integrate communication technology in their everyday lives in order to facilitate identity management and social interaction. She received her BS in Communication from Cornell University and received her MA and PhD from the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania. In her new book "The Qualified Self: Social Media and the Accounting of Everyday Life", Dr. Humphreys, argues that the act of documenting and sharing one's everyday life is not new – nor is it particularly narcissistic, putting our mobile and social media use in a historical context.
Michiko Kurahashi MS '86, PhD '90, Chief Marketing Officer of AXIS Capital
Michiko Kurahashi joined AXIS Capital, a provider of specialty insurance and global reinsurance, in September 2016 as its Chief Marketing Officer. Previously, she served as Head of Marketing at BankOnCIT.com, CIT Bank's digital retail bank. leading the development of the digital bank. Prior to CIT Bank, Dr. Kurahashi held leadership positions at UBS and HSBC where she built brand awareness, launched innovative products, and developed client management capabilities for wealth management, asset management, capital markets, and brokerage in the U.S., Canada, and Latin America.
Dr. Kurahashi holds both a PhD and master's degree in quantitative research and segmentation theory from Cornell University and a bachelor's degree in sociology from the University of Michigan.
Kyle Scott '11, Producer and Content Strategist at NBC News
Kyle Scott joined NBC in 2011 and has worked as Program Coordinator and Associate Producer for Weekend Nightly News, the Today Show, and NBC News. He currently leads a team as producer and editor of original digital content at NBC News.
Kyle's experience in media has informed his approach to online personal branding and how it can best serve a person's professional development.
Kyle received his Bachelor's Degree in Applied Economics and Managements from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences/Dyson in 2011.
