Art Demystified: An Inside Look into the Art Auction Market
Whether you view art as a passion or an investment, it is crucial to understand the role of the auction house in the broader art market and the importance of appraisals whether for an individual work or collection. The presentation will discuss best practices for buying, selling and valuing tangible personal property and will touch upon a variety of property including motor cars, jewelry, rare books and fine art. Topics will include the process and timeline of buying and selling at auction; types of appraisals and values; key determinates of value; regulated materials, authenticity, and title/provenance.
As a Director of Bonham’s Valuations, Trusts & Estates department in New York, Alanna Butera assists fiduciaries, executors and families in the valuation of property for estate planning, and insurance purposes along with the disposition of fine art, jewelry, motor cars and other valuable items. Butera received her Master of Art in Art Business from Sotheby’s Institute of Art and her bachelor’s degree in Economics and Art History from the University of Pennsylvania.
