Understanding Ike:  Four Key Eisenhower Traits and Their Role in the Space Race

What made Dwight D. Eisenhower tick?  America’s 34th president led the country through eight years of peace and prosperity, and today historians have come to applaud his achievements, even ranking him as one of the nation’s greatest presidents.  How can we explain Eisenhower’s success?  What about Ike helped to compile his record of achievement?

Historian Yanek Mieczkowski will discuss crucial Eisenhower traits that give insight into his personality and policies.  Mieczkowski’s particular focus is on Eisenhower’s space program, which has gone largely unexamined—until Cornell University Press published his recent book, Eisenhower’s Sputnik Moment:  The Race for Space and World Prestige.  Mieczkowski’s work shows that Eisenhower built an impressive record in space and on earth, providing leadership, and policy lessons that still endure today.

Professor Yanek Mieczkowski is a native Ithacan and chairs the History Department at Long Island’s Dowling College.  He holds a Ph.D. from Columbia University, and his previous books include Gerald Ford and the Challenges of the 1970s and The Routledge Historical Atlas of Presidential Elections.  Dr. Mieczkowski’s writings have appeared in American History and World War II History magazines, Newsday, Florida Today, the History News Network, The Reader’s Companion to the American Presidency, and many other publications.  He has also contributed more than 40 biographies to The American National Biography.  Dr. Mieczkowski has appeared on ABC News, CNN, CSPAN, and the H2 History Channel, and he is a regular commentator on presidential history for the Regional News Network’s “Richard French Live” television show.  For 14 years, Dr. Mieczkowski also worked as a reader for the Educational Testing Service, grading the Advanced Placement Exam in U.S. History.
