Join Michael S. Schmidt, a Washington D.C.-based national security reporter for The New York Times, for an in-depth look at the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, also known as ISIS or ISIL.  Michael, who regularly reports on ISIS, will cover everything you need to know about the terrorist group, including how and why it was formed, how it operates, what its goals are, and how much of a threat it poses to the U.S. and to the world.  Michael will also address how the United States has developed new ways to track Americans travel, as well as the impact that additional counter-terrorism efforts are having on the F.B.I.'s efforts to stop other crimes.

Schmidt has worked for The New York Times for a decade where he generally covers the F.B.I. and national security issues.  In just the past year, he has broken several high-profile stories, including the FBI’s investigation into whether the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team hacked into the Houston Astros’ network, and Hillary Clinton’s use of a personal email account when she served as Secretary of State.  Schmidt was also the reporter who obtained the video footage of the fatal shooting of an unarmed black man running from a police officer in North Charleston, South Carolina.  In May, he broke the story on the arrests of several FIFA executives while witnessing the events unfold first-hand from the lobby of the luxury hotel in Zurich where the men were apprehended. In recent months, Michael has also traveled with and written stories on the President and Secretary of Defense.

Michael lectures on the stories he’s covered and often appears on national television, including CNN, MSNBC and Fox News.  Before moving to Washington in 2012, Michael was on the front lines as a reporter for the Times in Iraq, living and working in Baghdad, where he covered the last year of the American occupation. While there, he crafted a groundbreaking piece about military documents that outlined one of the worst atrocities of the war.  Schmidt graduated from Lafayette College in 2005 with a B.A. in International Affairs.  Shortly thereafter, he began his career at the Times as a news clerk on the foreign desk.

6:00pm cash bar reception; 6:30pm lecture, gratis.  Members and guests are invited to dine at The Club table following the lecture. The cost is $40 per person, inclusive of tax, gratuity, and one glass of wine with dinner. Dinner reservations are required 48 hours prior to the program. Same day cancellations and no shows will be charged.
