Rowing Blazers: The Patriarch of Athletic Fashion
At the Princeton Club
Jack Carlson and his book Rowing Blazers looks at the authentic striped, piped, trimmed, and badged blazers that are still worn by oarsmen and -women around the world today, and at the elaborate rituals, elite athletes, prestigious clubs, and legendary races associated with them. Crew, the centuries-old, classic sport of choice, has played a major role in Ivy traditions – Princeton since 1872, Columbia beginning in 1852, Fordham starting in 1915, and Lafayette since 1880, among others. Few realize that the sport and traditions associated with rowing were responsible for laying down the groundwork for a men's fashion staple – the blazer.
Jack Carlson is a three-time member of the United States national rowing team. He won a bronze medal for the U.S.A. at the 2015 World Championships and has also won the Head of the Charles Regatta, Henley Royal Regatta, and Royal Canadian Henley Regatta. Carlson earned his doctorate in archaeology at the University of Oxford, where he was a Clarendon Scholar, and his undergraduate degree at Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service. His research interests include the visual trappings of status and power; heraldry and vexillology; the art and archaeology of the Roman Principate and Qin-Han period China; menswear; and Neapolitan pizza. Carlson is the author of the acclaimed book Rowing Blazers, A Humorous Guide to Heraldry, and a wide variety of academic and popular articles.
