News media organizations and reporters who cover news outside of US borders are navigating a changing world and do their jobs under enormous pressure. Journalists faced numerous and often unexpected roadblocks to deliver timely, useful, and meaningful information to the public. In today’s 24/7 news cycle, the operating arena is changing nearly-daily with influences, obstacles, and opportunities generated by technology, citizen journalism, natural disasters, regional conflicts, and varied views of what constitutes the freedom of speech.

This panel hosted by The Cornell Club-New York and the Georgetown Club of Metropolitan New York will provide a behind-the-scenes look at how stories are identified, news is covered and reporters make it into the field and back to headquarters safely. Further, as Georgetown University alumnus, Austin Tice, is among the journalists being held hostage in Syria, we will learn how Reporters Without Borders has been involved with efforts to secure his safe return and what can be done and is being done in this most extreme example of journalist safety at risk.

 Our panelists are:

·       Delphine Halgand, USA Director, Reporters Without Borders

·       Scott Lamb, VP of International, Buzzfeed

·       Moderator, Ivy Cohen, Ivy Cohen Corporate Communications, Georgetown University MBA
