The Cornell Club Welcomes Cornell Professor Daniel Schwarz, Speaking on His New Book How to Succeed in College

In an event for parents and high school students, Professor Schwarz will discuss how to choose the right college and how to get the right college to choose you.  He will speak about preparation for the college, the application process and how students can make the make the most of high school, and, especially the college admissions process itself, including what admissions officers look for, why do early decision, financial aid opportunities, how to choose a school if you wish to play sports. He has participated in the admissions process a number of years, including recently.

Professor Schwarz will discuss how college students can balance the practicality and joy of a college education and how to use college to prepare not only for economic well-being but also for participating in our democracy and for enjoying the arts; how the arts contributes to the joy and value of our lives; and the place of the humanities for all college students, whatever their backgrounds and career aspirations.

Daniel R. Schwarz is Frederic J. Whiton Professor of English Literature and Stephen H. Weiss Presidential Fellow at Cornell University, where he has taught since 1968. He is a renowned teacher, scholar, and public intellectual and appears frequently in the media. In 1998 he received Cornell's College of Arts and Sciences Russell award for distinguished teaching.  Sections of his well-reviewed and insightful book on undergraduate education, How to Succeed in College and Beyond: The Art of Learning (Wiley) have appeared in the Huffington Post well as other publications including the Cornell Alumni Magazine. His book is also being translated in Mandarin for a Chinese edition. Among his well-known 17 books are Endtimes: Crisis and Turmoil at the New York Times, Broadway Boogie Woogie: Damon Runyon and the Making of New York Culture, and Imagining the Holocaust.  His two sons are Cornell graduates:  David '89 and Jeffrey '94.  

6:00-6:30pm reception; 6:30pm lecture, gratis. Advance reservations required by Friday, February 17th. Attendees are invited to dine at The Club with Professor Schwarz following the lecture. The cost is $40 per person, inclusive of tax, gratuity and one glass of wine with dinner. Dinner reservations are required 48 hours prior to the program. Same-day cancellations and no shows will be charged.
