INTER-CLUB BEER TASTING: BELGIAN VS. CRAFT DOMESTIC BELGIAN STYLE

The Harvard Club once again welcomes its members and fellow Inter-Club Members for the annual Summer Beer Tasting. This year Garrett Oliver, brewmaster of Brooklyn Brewery, will lead a tasting of Belgian beers and their domestic craft brewery counterparts. Mr. Oliver, whom Eric Asimov called “the greatest ambassador for craft beer in this country for the past 10 years”, is the editor-in-chief of The Oxford Companion to Beer and author of The Good Beer Book and The Brewmaster’s Table: Discovering the Pleasures of Real Beer with Real Food. Beginning his career as an apprentice at Manhattan Brewing Company in 1989, Garrett Oliver quickly rose to prominence as an expert in the field. As brewmaster at Brooklyn Brewery since 1994, he has revived the ancient art of bottle conditioning in which beers are allowed to fully ferment with a little yeast in their bottles for months, creating their own natural bubbles and added complexity. Mr. Oliver was a founding Board member of Slow Foods USA and last year’s winner of the James Beard Foundation Award for Excellence in the category of “Outstanding Wine, Beer, or Spirits Professional”.

The evening’s selections will include Abbey/Trappist Ales, Tripel Ales and Farmhouse Saisons. In the latter category we will sample Brooklyn Brewery’s Sorachi Ace which uses a long-lost varietal of Japanese hops. The Harvard Club’s Chef David Haviland will prepare a delectable menu with a modern Belgian flair to complement the beers.

6:30pm-8:30pm.  $52 per person, plus tax and service.  Advance reservations required and space is extremely limited.  All reservations are considered final sale Wednesday, August 12th and will be charged in full.
