AN EXCLUSIVE IN PERSON SCREENING AND VIRTUAL Q&A WITH ARTEMIS JOUKOWSKY
Defying the Nazis: The Sharps' War
A film directed by Ken Burns and Artemis Joukowsky

On Thursday, April 28, 2022 at 6:15pm, The Cornell Club will be showing the documentary film "Defying the Nazis: The Sharps' War." This is the cloak-and-dagger story of Waitstill and Martha Sharp, a missionary couple who leave their home and children in Massachusetts and travel to Czechoslovakia on the eve of World War II to help smuggle refugees to safety. Over two dangerous years they helped to save hundreds of imperiled political dissidents and Jewish refugees fleeing the Nazi occupation across Europe. The film is co-directed by Ken Burns and the couple's grandson, Artemis Joukowsky. The voice of Waitstill Sharp is spoken by Tom Hanks

If you cannot attend in person, we will show the film through Zoom, where the attendees can also participate in the Q&A. Director Artemis Joukowsky will be participating virtually over Zoom.

Artemis Joukowsky, III first learned of his grandparents' amazing story as a student in 1976 when he was assigned to write a report on moral courage. He was encouraged by his mother to speak to his grandparents about their time in Europe during the war. These initial interviews led him to his life's work of sharing the Sharps' story with others. Joukowsky has gone on to become a filmmaker and private investor who has acted as a venture capitalist, asset advisor, entrepreneur, non-profit activist and film director and producer for the past 30 years.

6:15pm in person screening and Q&A, gratis. Advanced registrations required. The lecture will be livestreamed for members unable to attend the event in person. Non members and those who would like to watch the event on Zoom can register by emailin[email protected].
