Oxford University Jazz Orchestra
The Oxford University Jazz Orchestra (OUJO) is a Big Band based in Oxford, England. Formed in 1991, the student-led orchestra has spawned some renowned musicians including trumpeter Mark Armstrong (now director of England's National Youth Jazz Orchestra), Canadian vocalist Diana Nalini, Saxophonists Carlos Lopez Real and Idris Rahman and English National Opera conductor Steve Higgins. They share many past and present members with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, and a number of members each year go on to become professional players.
Its diverse talented members are passionate about the music they make, which encompasses a large repertoire of Big Band and large ensemble music. They like to find rare and unusual arrangements and compositions to set ourselves apart: from Big Band classics to more modern charts from the likes of Maria Schneider and Kenny Wheeler, as well as a wealth of original commissions and pieces written by past and current members.
Since its inception, the Oxford University Jazz Orchestra has played to sold out audiences around the globe including at the Sheldonian Theatre in Oxford at sell-out capacity of 900 audience members- the first time the venue has ever hosted a Big Band, Oeuf de Jazz festival in Le Mans, France, Glasgow International Jazz Festival, Scotland, undertaking an 'After Work' series at jazz clubs in New York and, most recently, supporting the Mingus Big Band on the main stage of the Ottawa Jazz Festival with an appearance at the Montreal International Jazz Festival and Toronto Jazz Festival, Canada.
