Ann Lee, author of a new book titled What the U.S. Can Learn from China and a senior fellow at Demos, focuses on issues of global economics and finance. Ann is a former investment banker, hedge fund partner and is a frequent media commentator on economic issues. In addition to television and radio appearances on Bloomberg, ABC, CBS, CNN, CNBC and NPR, her op-eds have appeared in The Financial Times, The Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, Businessweek, Forbes, and Worth. Ann is also an adjunct professor of economics and finance at New York University and a former visiting professor at Peking University where she taught macroeconomics and financial derivatives. While she was teaching at Peking University, she also acted as an economic adviser to Chinese economic officials as well as to several large Chinese asset management firms. She was educated at U.C. Berkeley, Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of International Affairs, and Harvard Business School. In the book, Ann discusses how the United States can also learn from a country that will likely soon have the world’s largest economy. At a time when many choose to complain about the United States economy, Ann examines how China’s education policies, economic policies and financial markets, foreign policies, strategic planning can be studied to positively impact our own.

The Price of Inequality: How Today’s Divided Society Endangers Our Future

Critics are charging that our current economic system has made America the most unequal advanced industrial country, with crippled growth and undermined democracy. With the top 1 percent of Americans controlling an estimated 40 percent of the country’s wealth, Stiglitz makes a forceful argument against our divided society and vicious circle of inequality. In an effort to bridge that growing gap, Stiglitz offers his plan for changing our current fiscal and budgetary policies and create a more just and prosperous future.
Joseph Stiglitz is a professor at Columbia University and former chief economist and senior vice president of the World Bank. In 2001, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in economics. He was recently ranked as #33 of Foreign Policy magazine’s ‘Top 100 Global Thinkers” list.

Join Mr Stiglitz and fellow Ivy League Club Members for an evening of conversation and cocktails.
7:00pm cocktail reception, 7:30pm lecture and book signing

Join George Rothman, Music Director and Conductor of New York’s critically acclaimed Riverside Symphony, for an engaging look behind the scenes of the orchestra’s upcoming season finale performance on June 6th at Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center. The concert, entitled “Poetry and Motion” features the highly regarded movie, television and stage actress Cynthia Nixon (best known for her role as Miranda Hobbes in HBO’s “Sex and the City”) who will narrate “The Story of Babar the Little Elephant”, Francis Poulenc’s endearing gem, based on the beloved children’s tale. The program opens with a world premiere of a new work, “The Tree without End”, by Evan Hause, an up-and-coming American composer, inspired by a French picture book in which a tree represents the circle of life. Acclaimed pianist, Shai Wosner, rounds out the musically adventurous evening with a performance of Beethoven’s poetic masterpiece, “Piano Concerto No. 4”. Maestro Rothman will share insights into how he conceived the program, explain how a Conductor shapes the expression of the music, and teach listening skills that will deepen your concert-going experience. All attendees will receive prime seating tickets to the June 6 evening performance at 7:30pm. Experience why The New York Times proclaimed, “Were it not for brave enterprises like Riverside Symphony, no one would hear programs of such ambition and originality.”

Katie Couric, who has earned six Emmy awards and a George Foster Peabody award, will interview powerhouse David Westin as they both discuss new media and Westin’s upcoming behind-the-scenes book Exit Interview. In March 1997, when Westin became president of ABC News, TV journalism was in the throes of rebirth: cable networks were proliferating, the Internet was emerging as a viable medium for journalists, and the Big Three were losing the cultural dominance they had enjoyed for decades. Post-cold war America was enjoying an era of peace and prosperity. “It looked like all the really important news was behind us,” Westin writes. It wasn’t, of course, and for the next thirteen years he presided over ABC News for some of the most important, thrilling, fraught, and perplexing events in its history. His upcoming book, Exit Interview is a behind the-scenes look at his tenure and the major news that marked it. Neither an apologia nor a critique, the book instead addresses basic questions about journalists today. With touchstones from the recent past, Westin takes us inside the chaos of the newsroom, where what looks clear and certain from the outside is often mired in conflict and urgency. He explores the uncertainty inherent to his job, and its central question: Is it possible for journalists to be both good at their jobs and people of good moral character?

Mohandas K. Gandhi, whose nonviolent techniques have become well-known from India to the United States, had many ideas about how to live in the modern world. Although he argued that we should live simply, Gandhi did not suppose we should retreat to the past but attempted to imagine new futures in which ideas such as duty, obligation, and empathy might guide how we live.
Ghosh’s teaching and research focus on understanding the history of colonialism on the Indian subcontinent. Her current research focuses on popular and radical political movements in early and mid-twentieth century India and the ways in which violence against the British colonial state became an important, but historically underemphasized, form of protest. Professor Ghosh is a graduate of Wesleyan University and received her M.A from the University of Wisconsin. In 2000 she received her Ph.D. from University of California, Berkeley
